Ubuntu Screencasts Team

As Carthik has already reported, we are pleased to announce a new team of volunteers to grace the Ubuntu community: the Ubuntu Screencasts Team. The object of this team, is… to make screencasts! It’s all in the name.

Screencasts are videos which show users how to achieve a specific task in Ubuntu, and can complement documents and be used throughout Ubuntu’s support resources, such as the forums, mailing lists and live chat.

The project is spearheaded by Alan Pope from the Ubuntu-UK group. But it was too cool a project to keep to himself, so I’ve helped Alan turn it into a team, and we’re recruiting more volunteers to help!! All the information you need to learn how to contribute, including requesting new screencasts and learning how to make them, is on our team wiki page.

The homepage for the screencasts is currently doc.ubuntu.com/screencasts (although we are hoping to find a more permanent home for it shortly).

I’m excited about this team because screencasts take helping users to a new level, and the possibility of integrating them with the documentation will be really beneficial. Come and help us out!

This is an excellent project, and you would be removing one of the largest barrier for the sign language community – where they may find an aurally based language (spoken language) difficult to read/understand. A screencast is easier to follow and they can just follow the examples.

Lovely work and I thank all the people working to make screencasts.

Yes, I think that it is just great! As I started to use Ubuntu a few months ago and really fell in love with it, I really like that type of information – screencasts because they are easy to understand. Thanks for this project and good luck! :)

Its definitely a good idea to do these screencasts. I’m sure many users will find it beneficial, especially those new to Ubuntu. I just have a question though, are you planning to team up with the following site which also does the same thing?

Edmund: no; ubuntuvideo.com is a rather different site – it simply streams videos from google and youtube, without hosting its own videos. Also, it’s the subject of any type of videos, whereas our project is limited to tutorials. We would certainly be interested in some kind of relationship, but it seems the site is currently unmaintained and we haven’t had a response.

    Hello Matt & Screencast Team

What a great Idea!! This is what our organization has been waiting for as the clients we deal with on a day to day basis for the most part, possess very basic knowledge of computers let alone software this is the cats meow so to speak. We are an organization that assists clients in the low income community who are financially challenged accquire computer technology and Ubuntu was the answer to our software problem and the now the screencasts will only enhance our ability to help give the confidence to them to make their computing experience much enjoyable and pleasant. Keep up the great work and making computing more accessable to all. I wellcome you to view our website and make suggestions and give advice as we like to hear from our friends who make the Ubuntu experience beautiful.

    Sincere and Kindest Regards
